It's good we have a theme for our new home as it helps us to focus on design of furnishing. Unfortunately we chose an expensive theme that caused our expenses to rise like the Yen.
Zen/Japanese theme. Think tatami mats, sliding doors, dark carpentry works, minimal furniture, platform areas, blinds. We checked out tatami mats and the prices scared us off. Out goes our dream of a tatami living/bedroom. Same for the platform areas. Due to the flat layout, sliding door isn't possible. Changing the existing sliding door at the bomb shelter and kitchen meant additional unnecesary expenses. With the amount of things we have, minimal furniture is quite impossible. We wanted curtains to cut cost but it didn't seem to fit our theme. To us, Zen equals bamboo / wooden blinds. The quotation almost caused a heart attack but we took it because it's Zen looking.
Our choice of furnitures are limited to teak wood designs and they are expensive compared to the modern fabric/leather designs. Choice of lightings limited too. Nowadays it seems like modern chic and resort feel are the "in" thing so it's very difficult for us to find something suitable. We kept stretching our budget to purchase these items.
I've temporarily stopped checking our budget. Just looking at our bank account balance diminishing at an exponential rate is enough. We seriously need to strike Toto soon.

Sales staff from hell
What's supposed to be a pleasant experience selecting pre-wedding photos turned into a nasty experience. We had only 28 pose in our package. In our first round of selection we shortlisted 100 poses. Immed they started to calculate how much to top up. That worked out to almost S$4k! We declined, preferring to cut down on poses rather than forking out that sum. The sales guy sat in front of us to "help" us select. In reality he was there to influence us to choose more.
At the end of the 2nd round, our selection was down to 50. Again he tried to push us to top up $2k+ for it. When we seemed insistent not to top up, his face turned black, played with his hp while we further shortlist and suddenly just left us alone. Soon after his lady boss took over his seat and he left the shop w/o a goodbye.
His boss was extremely aggressive. She even took some photos from our non-selected stack and psycho us to select it to create a "story". When we still refused and stuck to our 28 poses, she said based on our selection the album layout will be traditional and boring. Her face turned very black and just ignored us when we had to choose photo frame. Just before we left, she tried to sell the hard copies of the 3o0 photos, saying it will be shredded. I was quite tempted but the price tag of $200 was ridiculous for 300 pieces of photo, out of which only 100 were ok. The rest was badly taken. Unhappy that we didn't buy, she passed very sarcastic remarks such as "dun tell me you dun have $200?" Terrible service!! Frankly speaking, even if I had that extra $200 or $2k to spare, I wouldn't spend it there!
When I went to collect the photo album last week, again she tried to sell me the hardcopies. I didnt want to reply her and quickly left the shop. To brides-to-be reading this, please avoid Bridal De Couture!
